REC Solar and Ventura Energy have completed a 1.73-megawatt solar project at Farmers Irrigation Company's Santa Paula site. Two rooftop solar cell arrays have been installed on the newly constructed reservoir cover, which is a key component of Farmers Irrigation Company's broader infrastructure modernization efforts aimed at transforming its water distribution from a gravity based system to a pressurized system. Motive Energy serves as the EPC partner for this project.
This project reflects the successful collaboration between strategic partners, combining the long-term ownership and operational model under the 25 year power purchase agreement signed between REC Solar and Ventura Energy. Our partners have jointly provided customized clean energy solutions aimed at generating approximately $12 million in total energy value throughout their lifecycle and achieving a net savings of $5 million, which will directly reduce operating costs for Farmers Irrigation Company member farms and agricultural enterprises.
For over a century, Farmers Irrigation Company has been the backbone of the agricultural industry in Ventura County, and REC Solar is proud to support their efforts to integrate renewable energy into their new modern operations, "said Scott Therein, Strategic Partner Director at REC Solar. Establishing strong partnerships with partners such as Ventura Energy is crucial for providing energy solutions that can provide value to all stakeholders. We will work together to help Farmers Irrigation Company and its members ensure a cleaner and more reliable future. ”
Farmers Irrigation Company was founded in 1879, dedicated to supplying water to farms throughout Ventura County, relying on gravity fed canals and pipelines for a long time. Transitioning to a pressurized distribution system will improve the reliability, flexibility, and system control of cooperative water supply operations. Due to the need for more energy in the pressurization system, solar power generation provides enormous value for the future operation of Farmers Irrigation Company. Their modernization efforts will make agriculture in Ventura County more efficient in terms of water, energy, and cost.
Barney Caudell, General Manager of Farmers Irrigation Company, said, "This project gives us more confidence in the long-term stability of our water supply system. Having a predictable and cost-effective source of electricity can enhance our ability to manage expenses and continue investing in the services that our agricultural community relies on
.
In addition to cost savings in operation, the project also emphasizes how local developers and long-term energy owners can work together to modernize important agricultural infrastructure in the region.
Clara Nagy McBane, CEO of Ventura Energy, said: "Ventura Energy is honored to collaborate with REC Solar and Farmers Irrigation Company on a project that perfectly reflects the collaborative work style our team is pursuing. ”This is a powerful example of how local developers and independent power plants are working together to modernize critical infrastructure. By combining high-value solar power with Farmers Irrigation Company's new pressurization system, we are helping agricultural enterprises throughout Ventura County create a more resilient and cost-effective future.
